"It Was Not the “News” That Traveled Slowly — It Was 'Power'”
By Christopher Wilson, Experience Design Director, Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History
For those who don't know about its origins, Juneteenth is the commemoration of the end of slavery; or rather celebrating the amount of time it took for the last enslaved individuals to be freed on June 19, 1865—slave owners in Texas resisted the laws and kept enslaved individuals for an additional two years after the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. (To learn more about the history of Juneteenth, check out this article.) Also, did you know that Juneteenth is what is called a 'portmanteau?'

The celebration of Juneteenth is not about honoring one day, it's about the process of getting us all to freedom and equality.

Whether direct or covert, racial injustice continues everyday—Juneteenth only became a federal paid holiday one year ago.

As we continue onward in the year of ‘the follow through’ please note that we are only half way through 2022—there is still plenty of time to make 'good trouble.'

Everyone deserves equitable access to information, opportunities and services. With nonprofit services and information increasingly moving online, nonprofit website accessibility testing is more important than ever before.

In fact, more than 1 billion people around the world (or 15%of the world population) are living with a disability, which means if your nonprofit website is not accessible you are missing opportunities to connect with community members, partners, clients and much more.
